Nouryon keeps decades of acquired data compliant – and retires the rest.

After acquiring CP Kelco’s CMC business, Nouryon needed secure, compliant access to historical financial, tax and product-batch data. Cella, delivered with our partner Proceed, gave them a read-only home for exactly the records they needed.

The Challenge

Compliant access to an acquired business’s data

Nouryon is a global leader in specialty chemicals, with a strong safety and sustainability track record, manufacturing solutions used in personal care, cleaning, paints and coatings, agriculture and food, pharmaceuticals and building products.

Nouryon began working with Proceed when it faced the need to access the historical information and data of US-based CP Kelco’s CMC business, following its acquisition in 2020. To manage compliance, it was important that Nouryon could access historical financial and tax data – including data on product batches that might need to be recalled on a timely basis.

CP Kelco was not able to deliver that historical information from its CMC business division in a format Nouryon could easily use. The data needed to be stored in a sleeper system, with access configured so that Nouryon remained compliant for quality regulations and could provide information for any future audits.

The solution

A read-only sleeper system, holding exactly the right data

For such a complex project, Nouryon sought the help of Proceed and the Cella decommissioning platform. The project started in the second half of 2020, when CP Kelco provided data from their global SAP ECC production system. That system was still in use by other parts of CP Kelco’s business, so – with security in mind – it was essential that only data related to the CMC business was extracted.

Using Cella, Proceed created a SAP sleeper system to store the historical data in a read-only format, giving Nouryon a data retention system of its own. There was full collaboration with CP Kelco’s employees, who were closely involved in setting the extraction filters and reviewing the results, and who checked the data sent from the company data centre in the US to the Cella data centre in Germany.

  • CMC data only, carefully filtered out of a shared SAP ECC production system for security.
  • A read-only sleeper system in Cella, giving Nouryon its own compliant retention platform.
  • 6 TB of data captured, with the extraction and transmission process taking 12 calendar days.
  • Access limited to named employees only, for data security.
The results

Compliant, trained and one click from the data

Nouryon concluded a successful project, remaining in compliance with the necessary governing bodies. Several people across the organisation were fully trained on Cella and now have instant access to historical data whenever it is required – at the touch of a button.

In the customer’s words
  • “Proceed Cella has been a valuable tool for us to use as we manage the complexity of data across different sites.”
